Will Call of Duty MW3 have Zombies?

Call of Duty MW3 Zombies may not be on the bingo cards of most, as the Modern Warfare series has never had the mode before, but things might be changing.

Modern Warfare 3 zombies: a zombie

Will Call of Duty MW3 (2023) have Zombies? Having originally been introduced in Call of Duty World at War, the Zombies mode has made many appearances in COD titles over the last 15 years. And if current leaks are to be believed, an MW3 Zombies mode could materialize, though not quite in the traditional sense.

Before we get into that though, be sure to get up to speed with everything we know so far about 2023’s Modern Warfare 3. Check out details and speculation about the MW3 campaign, which MW3 characters could return for the sequel, or even if we’ll get to see MW3 on Game Pass – we know Xbox players will be especially keen to check out the latter. But here’s what we know about the possibility of slaying some zombies in MW3.

Will Modern Warfare 3 have Zombies?

Modern Warfare 3 will have a Zombies mode, according to leaks. As per Insider Gaming, MW3 will have what is essentially “Outbreak 2.0” – the spiritual successor to the mode first introduced in Black Ops Cold War.

Combining open-world game elements with the traditional horror game meets horde mode formula, the original Outbreak arrived in Season Two of Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. The large-scale co-op game mode tasks squads of four with aiding Requiem in Operation Threshold, which takes place across multiple regions in the Ural Mountains.

By working together to complete objectives, explore the map, and fight off hordes of particularly-peeved undead, players can collect Aetherium Crystals, granting them permanent weapon and skill upgrades when exchanged. As the waves of undead continue to pile up, squads can choose to exfiltrate to safety if things get too hot to handle.

For Modern Warfare 3, we’d expect it to pull elements from the first iteration developed by Treyarch for Black Ops Cold War, while looking to expand on many of its core systems – be it enemy, perk, or upgrade variety. With how collaborative CoD development is these days between Activision’s many studios, there’s a chance Treyarch may either assist or entirely develop this rumored Zombies experience in MW3, rather than the reported lead developer of the game, Sledgehammer.

Should Modern Warfare 3 have zombies?

In a sense, it’s surprising that perhaps the most iconic CoD sub-series of them all has yet to treat players to the gut-spraying Zombies experience that’s become a series staple elsewhere. Of course, zombies have always been Treyarch’s forte, and the best experiences can be found in its Black Ops series of CoD games. However, the prospect of Activision giving it a go in Modern Warfare 3 sounds like a recipe for success.

Zombies are, after all, the perfect palate cleanser for those who are either having a tough time landing their shots on human enemies in multiplayer or have their pals over and are in need of a co-op arcade experience they can whittle away at while they wile away the hours.

Many are perhaps chomping at the bit for Modern Warfare 3 zombies to utilize the classic gameplay experience of Nacht der Untoten, rather than a revamped Outbreak. But nonetheless, it’ll be exciting to see what the mode will look like – should it materialize – within Modern Warfare 3.
