It looks like we may already know what happened to Earth in Starfield

If you're wondering what happened to Earth in Starfield, one eagle-eyed fan has spotted a detail that spells bad news for our home in this Xbox and PC RPG.

Starfield what happened to Earth: an image of a woman with an image of Earth behind her

Of the literal hundreds of Starfield planets we’re going to be able to explore in one of the most exciting upcoming Xbox games ever, Bethesda’s Starfield, it doesn’t look like we’re going to be able to touch down on Earth – you know, the planet you’re most-likely reading this on right now. Mars, the Red Planet and our solar system neighbour, has been confirmed as a location we’ll be able to visit. So, what happened to Earth in Starfield, then? Well, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a detail ahead of the Starfield release date that might just explain what happened before 2330.

Albeit a little blurry as images go, Starfield fan ‘Sdejo‘ has spotted a globe seemingly depicting Earth in recent Starfield coverage from Bethesda that reveals a rather grim future for our planet in the Starfield universe – and, thus, an explanantion as to why humans abandoned it.

As you can see below, it looks as though much of Canada and north America is desert-like (which is in stark contrast to what it looks like right now, thankfully), and quite a lot of South America is arid. With landmass shapes distorted by rising sea levels (if this is indeed a map of Earth and the Americas), we can also see that it looks like the Rio Amazonas (the Amazon River) has flooded huge parts of Brazil and a lot of north-eastern America has been lost (states like Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia) to the sea.

So, yeah, sorry about that anyone who lives on the east coast.

On this globe, Brazil got rid of a good part of its rainforest. Also, either ice is reaching California or Canada is a desert

Of course, there’s nothing that confirms that this is a globe showing Earth; so, you’re going to want to take all of this with a pinch of salt. However, the similarities in landmass shape are undeniable and we already know that its largely abandoned in Starfield – there must be a reason for that, right?

Well, until we know a little more about what’s going on in Starfield’s universe, it really does look like a climate catastrophe is the reason why. Scarily, this is something we’re heading towards right now, too. With this cute Curiosity cameo confirming that Starfield’s universe shares more with our universe than first thought, could this be Bethesda offering us a warning of some kind? Well, we’ll let you be the judge of that.

While you’re here, you may also want to read what Todd Howard has said about Starfield’s exploration, too. Starfield pre-orders are live right now, and we’re still confident that this is going to be one of the best Xbox RPGs ever when it drops. Although, it’s not perfect and it’s worth knowing that.
