Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date, story, gameplay, and more

Here's the latest news on the Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date, the next big expansion to Bungie's hit FPS on PS5, PS4, Xbox, and PC.

Destiny 2 The Final Shape Release Date: Cayde can be seen

When is The Final Shape release date? In the years since its release, Destiny 2’s story has continued to grow in scope and quality, a trend that has continued so far during the Lightfall expansion year. However, the storyline that has been building over the past decade, The Light and Darkness Saga, is set to conclude with the next expansion, The Final Shape. Therefore, it’s important to know the Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date, along with story details, and other things we know about this huge expansion.

Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date

The Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date is expected to arrive in February 2024 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, following the precedent for expansion releases since The Witch Queen and Bungie’s confirmation of an early 2024 release window.

While no specific release date has been revealed by Bungie, if the previous expansions are anything to go by, we can expect The Final Shape to release in February. Since Destiny 2 The Witch Queen was delayed to launch on February 22, 2022, it looks as though each following expansion is to release on a yearly cadence in February. As such, Lightfall arrived on February 28, 2023, so The Final Shape is also likely to release in mid to late February 2024.

We will find out more on August 22, 2023 during The Final Shape showcase event, where will will also learn more about the future of the franchise beyond this expansion.

Before The Witch Queen delay, the yearly expansions for Destiny 2 used to launch in September. However, reverting back to this date would likely mean curtailing development on the expansion sooner than it’s ready.

With how high expectations currently are for conclusion to this epic saga, it would be highly surprising to see The Final Shape come any earlier than February. If anything, a delay would be more likely if Bungie feel it needs more time to make the finale as strong as possible.

Destiny 2 The Final Shape story

The Final Shape will seemingly bring back Cayde into the story, after a teaser was dropped at the PlayStation Showcase in 2023. We got a brief teaser showing Ikora talking to Cayde while announcing the reveal showcase for August 22, 2023.

This is a huge twist, but we are inclined to believe Cayde is probably still dead, due to the wispy energy around Cayde, but he is definitely on the other side of the Traveler with Ikora. This is also where The Witness has supposedly gone. But, we will have to wait to find out more until the showcase in August.

Additionally, following the events of Lightfall, Season of Defiance, and Season of the Deep, it looks as though The Final Shape will see us chasing the Witness into the Traveler itself for a final confrontation. However, not much else is known as of yet.

With The Final Shape being described as the last expansion in The Light and Darkness Saga, the expansion should conclude the story that has been building over the decade between the launch of Destiny in 2014 and the release of Destiny 2 The Final Shape in 2024. We can expect, therefore, to perhaps see some clash between the Light and Dark, and perhaps even learn more about the mysterious Gardener and Winnower as well.

Destiny 2 The Final Shape gameplay

Destiny 2 The Final Shape is still a long way out so we don’t currently have information about any new gameplay mechanics or features coming with the expansion. However, given that it is planned to be the momentous end of The Light and Darkness Saga, we can hope that Bungie has something big in store for this concluding chapter.

Destiny 2 The Final Shape subclass

It’s highly likely that Destiny 2 The Final Shape will see the arrival of the third Darkness subclass to the game, finally bringing the Darkness powers up to parity with the Light.

While there’s been no official confirmation by Bungie, there have been several leaks pointing towards a red subclass that is set to arrive in The Final Shape. Beyond this, however, the suspected subclass remains a mystery.

Is Destiny 2 The Final Shape the end of Destiny?

No, Destiny 2 The Final Shape is not the end of Destiny. Bungie have stated in a blog post that The Final Shape will be the final chapter in The Light and Darkness Saga, the “first saga of Destiny”. Therefore, whatever happens in The Final Shape will leave room for future narratives to emerge and play out.

In fact, in a recent roundtable interview, Shacknews reported that Bungie’s narrative designers hinted that the next saga will likely focus on the Vex.

According to the article, Senior Narrative Designer Nikko Stevens stated that “I think once Final Shape concludes, the Vex might be in a position to do some more stuff.” While the Vex have been largely pushed to the side lines over recent years, only now being brought back into the narrative with the Veil and Black Garden revelations, they’re set to make a big return.
