Starfield powers explained, all superpowers so far

From mind control to gravity manipulation, Bethesda are upping the chaos in combat with Starfield powers, unique abilities that make us into superheroes.

One unexpected feature revealed in the Starfield Direct was the inclusion of Starfield powers. So not only will we have heaps of sci-fi weaponry at our disposal, but also potentially superpowers. But what are all the Starfield powers? Well, we’ve scoured through all the footage released to provide you with everything there is to know about Starfield powers so far.

Starfield powers already look to be one of the most intriguing aspects of the game so far, infusing the fun of Skyrim’s Shouts and Fallout’s VATS system with a new sci-fi twist. Whether Starfield companions also have access to these superpowers or just the main character is yet to be seen, but we can’t wait to see what else is in store when the Starfield release date arrives.

The only Starfield power we’ve seen so far is a gravity disruption ability, which causes enemies to float and remain vulnerable in the air, though there are likely to be more superpowers available to the player.

We had a glimpse at this gravity-disrupting power at the end of the Starfield Direct 2023, when the main character holds out their hand and causes enemies to float in the air. As demonstrated in the gameplay, this is great for opening enemies up to attack or even to give yourself a breather as enemies floating are disarmed for the duration of the effect. No doubt this will come in very handy if you’re looking to push a room full of enemies that might otherwise send you to an early grave.

Beyond a gravity disruption power, there’s lots of potential for more Starfield powers given the sci-fi setting bolstered by mysterious, seemingly magical elements. One of the most likely powers we will see in Starfield is the ability to slow time during combat, as this ability has appeared in various Bethesda games in the past, including Skyrim and Fallout 4.

Outside of this, another potential power is telekinesis, letting you live out your Star Wars Jedi dreams in Starfield. In fact, the iconic Unrelenting Force Shout in Skyrim had a similar effect, pushing enemies backwards and causing them to ragdoll. As such, it’s not outside the scope of the Starfield powers to include a telekinesis ability, especially if we can already manipulate gravity.

Bethesda is yet to comment on whether these abilities are superpowers akin to Skyrim’s Shout system, or whether they are involved in the Starfield skills system. After all, there is the Xenosociology skill that lets you mind control aliens, which sounds a lot like powers to us.

Nevertheless, it’s believed that these special abilities are granted by the mysterious Starfield artifacts the main character and Constellation, one of the Starfield factions, are looking for. With a potential alien origin, it lines up that these mysterious relics grant the main character powers upon interacting with them, similar to how Word Walls work in Skyrim, offering the player new Shouts.

Well, that covers everything we currently know about Starfield powers, from gravity manipulation to potential telekinesis and alien mind control. So, while you’re building Starfield outposts and exploring the Starfield planets in search of secrets, you might also be acquiring new superpowers to use in combat.
