Alan Wake 2 is a shorter story than many horror fans may think

With a healthy dose of True Detective influence leading it forward, the Alan Wake 2 length isn't aiming to be extremely long but it may shorter than you expect.

Remedy Entertainment transports PS5 and Xbox players back to Bright Falls with Alan Wake 2, but things are far darker than the last time we visited. Our beloved author is missing, a killer is on the loose, and it’s making the wait for the Alan Wake 2 release date harder. But while you wait for it to arrive, your questions surrounding the Alan Wake 2 length have been answered by Remedy itself.

The Alan Wake 2 length is “over 20 hours” on PS5, Xbox, and PC according to communications director Thomas Puha.

Following up the mind-warping mayhem of Alan Wake Remastered and Alan Wake American Nightmare is no easy task, but completing the Alan Wake 2 story “depends on your skills, but currently – and [because] the game is not quite done yet because a lot of the content is still going in – we’re looking at over 20 hours,” says Puha.

Speaking to wcctech, Puha explains that the story is set to expand post-launch: “We are going to do two expansions, but we’re not really saying anything about that. But if you got to follow what we did on Control, it’ll be something similar.” Control was followed up by The Foundation and AWE expansions, with the latter providing some thrilling connections to Alan Wake lore.

While we won’t spoil anything here, what we will say is that if Jesse Faden, Alan Wake, and maybe even Quantum Break’s Jack Joyce meet eventually, it’ll be quite the sight to take in. After all, this isn’t the first time that Quantum Break has been mentioned alongside Alan Wake 2.

The inclusion of Alan Wake within the Remedy Connected Universe continues to be an enthralling prospect, with creative director Sam Lake stoking those fires previously. Though, when asked Alan Wake 2’s place in that universe, Puha responds by saying “that it’s really important that this game is very accessible, even if you haven’t played the first game.”

“If you have played our previous games, the first and the second expansion of Control, which kind of spells out how this whole game begins, then yeah, there are a lot of connections there and a lot of stuff to find out,” Puha details. You’ll definitely need a refresher with the array of Alan Wake 2 voice actors before exploring Bright Fall once more.

You’ll probably have noted that Alan Wake 2 is releasing very close to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 release date and Assassin’s Creed Mirage release date. Despite standing alongside Ubisoft and Insomniac Games in such a tight release window, Puha affirms that Remedy Entertainment is open to some healthy competition: “There’s always competition, right? We really only worry about making the best game we can. That’s what’s ultimately the most important thing.”

There are many upcoming PS5 games to be aware of this year, but as soon as the doors to the Dark Place open, we’ll see you there.
