What are Starfield legendary items? One detail that might have caught your attention during the Starfield Direct showcase was the existence of legendary items, but what are these exactly? And perhaps most importantly, how to get your legendary items in Starfield? Well, we’ve already got a good idea of these valuable items. So, here’s everything you need to know about Starfield legendaries right now.

Starfield legendary items are a great way to increase your power, alongside the actual Starfield powers. So, while you’re exploring the Starfield planets and completing quests with your Starfield companions, see if you can get your hands on some legendary items.

Starfield legendary items explained

Starfield legendary items are weapons and armor with bonus effects and modifiers that make them powerful gear worth tracking down. They are the highest quality of standard item drop.

From what we’ve seen so far, it’s likely that any of the Starfield weapons and Starfield armor can drop as a legendary item, simply having a unique and powerful bonus effect attached to it. For example, during the Starfield Direct we saw an Incendiary Calibrated Deep Mining Space Helmet. This comes with the Incendiary effect that gives a 10% chance to ignite nearby enemies. No doubt these legendary items and effects will be strong, even build-changing bonuses that can change how you play. If you’re using an Incendiary legendary item, for instance, charging into close-range with enemies using a shotgun will give you a better chance of triggering the bonus than staying at range.

When you inspect a piece of gear, you will notice that it has a tier level. Legendary gear is represented by a gold banner and three stars, so you will want to keep your eyes out for this kind of item drop.

It’s worth noting that legendary items are not the same as the Starfield unique items, which are likely to feature. Similar to Fallout 4, we expect there to be both legendary and unique items. While legendary items are standard items with legendary prefixes applied to them, unique items are truly one-of-a-kind. If Starfield follows suit, these will have unique weapon and armor models, as well as bonuses distinct to each respective unique item.

How to get Starfield legendary items

Starfield legendary items can be found just about anywhere, from any standard loot source, as they are simply rare, high-quality items with bonus effects. As such, there are not one-of-a-kind equipment pieces.

During the Starfield Direct, we see the players interact and loot a Science Crate, a standard loot box in certain environments. Inside is an Incendiary Calibrated Deep Mining Space Helmet, indicating the legendary items can be earned from any standard loot source, including enemy bodies and loot crates.

It’s also possible that players will be able to craft, or at least update legendary gear at their Starfield outposts and other crafting stations, expanding on the system from Fallout 4.

Remember, legendaries in Starfield are marked with a gold banner so it should be hard to gloss over a legendary loot drop when you see it. Nevertheless, always pay attention to what loot you’re picking up, as one could slip through the cracks.

Confirmed Starfield legendary items and effects

So far, the only Starfield legendary item and effect we’ve seen is the Incendiary prefix which provides a 10% chance to ignite nearby enemies.

With that said, we expect there to be a similar number of legendary effects to Fallout 4, which had 50 legendary prefixes once all of the game’s DLC had been released. This would offer players a great deal of variety when it comes to planning a build for your character. After all, if Bethesda wants it to be one of the best RPG games, then players will need lots of options to hone their playstyle and journey outside of the Starfield character creation process.

Starfield unique items

Bethesda have yet to confirm whether unique items are returning in Starfield, though it would be highly surprising if they did not. After all, both Skyrim and Fallout 4 featured legendary and unique items.

Nevertheless, the idea behind unique items is that they are one-of-a-kind gear pieces, with unique names and effects. Typically, unique items can only be found in specific locations, making tracking them down at least more reliable, if not outright easier. For example, Fallout 4 has unique Power Armor hidden in fortified locations across the world that players could find. We expect Starfield to also feature unique items that players can come across as they explore.

And that’s all there is to know about Starfield legendary items right now. Unfortunately, we’ll likely have to wait until the Starfield release date before we find out too much more about these powerful items and effects. Nevertheless, when it is out, you’ll be able to gear up your character with legendaries and uniques, and pair them with the Starfield skills to create powerful builds.
