For the past few years, being able to play with friends no matter the platform has become fairly normal. Most live-service titles include it, such as Fortnite or Call of Duty, and plenty of other multiplayer games offer it as a way to keep servers alive and strong. But does Mortal Kombat 1 have crossplay?

It’s almost time for us to enter into the tournament once the Mortal Kombat 1 release date finally arrives, and if you’re like us, you’re hoping you can get in on the Mortal Kombat 1 beta. With the return of the best fighting game series, we’re hoping we can play with friends regardless of our favorite console, especially thanks to Mortal Kombat 1’s rollback netcode.

Does Mortal Kombat 1 have crossplay?

We expect Mortal Kombat 1 to have crossplay between Xbox Series X|S and PS5 at the very least. Originally, the MK1 FAQs included a comment stating it would be added post-launch, but this has since been removed. However, Mortal Kombat 11 had crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation.

While Mortal Kombat 1 isn’t expected to have crossplay when it finally releases, it’s expected to be added post-launch thanks to an answer in the FAQs page of the Mortal Kombat site. This has since been removed, replaced by a suggestion that the Mortal Kombat 1 beta won’t include crossplay. You can see the original FAQ below:

Mortal Kombat 11 also offered crossplay, albeit three years after its initial release. This was limited to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, while PC and Nintendo Switch players could only play with others on their respective platforms. Hopefully, PC players can join in on Mortal Kombat 1 crossplay when it eventually releases, but we don’t expect Switch to be able to play cross-platform due to technical limitations.

Should Mortal Kombat 1 have crossplay?

Absolutely, since having crossplay can increase the lifetime of any game with such a focus on competitive multiplayer. While the success of the Mortal Kombat series means that it doesn’t really need to have crossplay to survive, it makes it much easier to find matches later on in a game’s lifecycle.

Since Mortal Kombat games usually come out every four years, it’s going to be more difficult to find any players online later on, especially during the last two years of the game. With the introduction of crossplay, it helps keep the community playing. Given the success of Mortal Kombat 11, crossplay coming to Mortal Kombat 1 would extend the lifespan of the upcoming title even more.
