The 12 best PS5 FPS games August 2023

If you’re a sharpshooter on the sticks, whether it’s with a sniper rifle or submachine gun, you need to be testing your skills in these best PS5 FPS games.

Best PS5 FPS games: Frost from Rainbow Six Siege and the Driller from Deep Rock Galactic back to to back.

The best PS5 FPS games list is a hotly contested topic, with plenty of games gunning for the honor. Some of these titles you’ll certainly have heard of before – we’d be remiss to not include a Call of Duty, for example – while others will be somewhat of a curveball.

This list of the best FPS games will undoubtedly change as more of the upcoming PS5 games launch and make a bid for our best games list, but for now, it’s time to fire some guns, whether that’s at other players online, or in a well-crafted single-player experience.

These are the best PS5 FPS games:

  • Warzone
  • Back 4 Blood
  • Destiny 2
  • Deathloop
  • Doom Eternal
  • Metro Exodus
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Apex Legends
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • Deep Rock Galactic
  • Metal Hellsinger

Best PS5 FPS games: Two Warzone 2 operators in Al Mazrah

1. Warzone

Let’s kick things off with an obvious pick. Call of Duty: Warzone is the free-to-play sequel to one of the only battle royale games to go toe-to-toe with Fortnite, arguably taking the crown from the genre pioneer over the last few years. Warzone 2.0 has introduced Al Mazrah, Ashika Island, and Vondel, three new maps to house the 150-player fight to the death, along with new mechanics including a gulag revamp.

If you’re one of the few to have never touched a Call of Duty game before, you’re in for a treat. Gunplay is crisp, movement is smooth, and there are plenty of playstyles you can make use of, whether you decide to play it slow and steady until just a few other players remain, or you embark on a hunt for blood.

No matter how you play, we’d recommend equipping one of the best Warzone loadouts to keep up with the current Warzone meta.

Best PS5 FPS games: Cleaners in Back 4 Blood attacking zombies

2. Back 4 Blood

Valve’s Left 4 Dead left a serious legacy behind it and Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to that immensely popular zombie shooter. Grab some pals – or tackle it solo if you fancy a challenge – and get ready to take on hordes of zombies in progressively more difficult levels. Pick from a roster of survivors, known as cleaners, each with their own abilities, and wield some seriously heavy firepower.

If you’re a Left 4 Dead veteran though, don’t go into Back 4 Blood thinking it’ll be a walk in the park. Our Back 4 Blood review explores how this is considerably more difficult than your average zombie co-op game, some of which is thanks to the many unique zombie types.

There’s also a deckbuilding element, so make sure you use the best Back 4 Blood cards as you fight to survive.

Best PS5 FPS games: A Titan shoots a gun in Destiny 2

3. Destiny 2

Did you know Destiny 2 is free-to-play now? Well, sort of – the space shooter became free to download alongside the launch of the Shadowkeep expansion in 2019, but you still need to pay for some of the expansions. However, it does mean you can get started building your Hunter, Titan, or Warlock, and experience what the game has to offer.

The main Destiny 2 draw comes in the main story, which you can either play through solo or with some pals. There’s far too much story and lore to summarise here, especially taking into consideration the first game, but gameplay-wise, each class offers vastly different playstyles and abilities, which can then be customised further with subclasses.

Then you have the PvP modes to face off against other players online, and if you really fancy yourself as the best of the best, you can tackle raids, which need serious teamwork and strategy. Destiny 2 is all about acquiring better loot and slaying thousands upon thousands of different hostile aliens – ideally with the best Destiny 2 weapons. Best PS5 FPS games: Colt tries to stop Julianna from killing him in Deathloop

4. Deathloop

If you’re looking for something a little bit different to the rest of the games on this list, then Deathloop is the game for you. Named as our Game of the Year in 2021, Arkane Lyon’s innovative FPS will test your trigger finger and your sleuthing skills at the same time.

During your time trapped in a time loop on Black Reef, you’ll be tasked with trying to kill one of several visionaries on the island without being detected, all while trying to survive being assassinated yourself. If you die, you go right back to the start, but you can use your discoveries to your advantage.

Deathloop is Arkane at its best and if you want to find out why we called it one of the “most innovative games in years”, you’ll have to read our Deathloop review.

Best PS5 FPS games: Someone holds a gun in Doom Eternal and shoots at enemies

5. Doom Eternal

If getting increasingly better loot doesn’t interest you and you’d rather shoot demons instead of aliens, Doom Eternal is the game for you. A solely single-player experience, the original Doom was one of the pioneers of the genre, and the 2016 reboot of the series was the goriest, metalest, most badass entry yet. Doom Eternal takes all of that and cranks it up to 11, with fast-paced demon-slaying action around every corner.

Wield weapons that pack a serious punch such as the Super Shotgun, Rocket Launcher, or the aptly named BFG 9000 (which stands for Big something Gun… we’ll let you figure out the F), and slaughter demons in hell to a phenomenal heavy metal soundtrack.

It’s incredibly cathartic.

Best PS5 FPS games: a soldier in MEtro Exodus wearing a gas mask and wielding an AK-47

6. Metro Exodus

Another single-player only experience, Metro Exodus is the third game in the series based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s books. It continues Artyom’s struggles in the Moscow underground after a post-apocalyptic event makes the surface uninhabitable, and while it’s not an open-world game, there’s plenty of survival elements involved including managing your gas mask supplies and conserving ammo.

You’ll come up against plenty of mutated beasts as Artyom fights to survive, along with other humans. Why can’t everyone just get along and fight against a common enemy, eh? Metro Exodus isn’t for the faint of heart as it’s somewhat of a horror game – you’ll be employing stealth and immersing yourself in the creepy atmosphere far more than you’ll be going in guns blazing.

Best PS5 FPS games: a unicorn in front of a rainbow castle in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

7. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Does Destiny sound like your sort of thing, but you fancy some humour in the story and fewer players wandering around? Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is what you’re after. A full blown spin-off from the Borderlands franchise, this is a cel-shaded looter shooter with jokes and references galore.

It’s framed as a D&D campaign, with the dungeon master (and narrator) being Tiny Tina herself, but the gameplay is anything but. Buddy up with a friend or play solo, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is all about the fast-paced FPS gameplay, with spells and abilities thrown in for good measure.

It’s very much more Borderlands despite dropping the name, and you can see why we loved it in our Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands review. Make sure you know where to find all of the lucky dice too, so you can earn a 10% boost to loot luck.

Best PS5 FPS games: Several characters fight on ziplines in Apex Legends

8. Apex Legends

Another battle royale, Apex Legends comes from Respawn Entertainment, the team behind one of the best FPS games of all time (though unfortunately not on PS5), Titanfall 2. Set in that same universe, Apex Legends introduces a wide character roster with futuristic weapons and all manner of abilities, from healing and traversal to the all-out offensive.

There are a number of different maps to learn, and with a character roster of 23 and counting, there’s a main for everyone. Our Apex Legends tier list will help you figure out exactly who to play as. There’s usually a seasonal event going on too, along with plenty of different modes, including Apex Legends ranked if you want to test your mettle against the very best.

Best PS5 FPS games: an operator breaches a vault in Rainbow Six Siege

9. Rainbow Six Siege

We’ve included a lot of fast-paced, chaotic shooters on this list, but if you’re looking for the exact opposite and fancy tactical gameplay instead, Rainbow Six Siege is the game for you. This is a five-on-five multiplayer shooter, with high-stakes game modes. Much like Apex Legends, the operator you pick is essential thanks to their unique abilities and weapons, so there’s some trial and error involved while you work out which characters suit you the best.

Siege isn’t a game you can play half-heartedly though, as communication and teamwork is essential thanks to the attackers vs defenders nature of the game – think Search and Destroy in Call of Duty, with slightly more at stake.

As you’d expect, ranked mode is the place to be for regular players, so if you’re that way inclined, make sure you read our guide to the Rainbow Six Siege ranks.

Best PS5 FPS games: Ghost moves through the overgrowth in Modern Warfare 2

10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Battle royale not your forte? Then an FPS with a compelling multiplayer and a decent single-player campaign might be more to your taste. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the latest instalment in the prestigious series and offers a whole load of fun in one small package.

On the single-player front, it continues the narrative from the previous Modern Warfare, featuring plenty of iconic characters including Soap McTavish and Captain Price, and is filled with epic set pieces.

Multiplayer features plenty of different playlists and a vast armoury of weapons to unlock and level up, while there’s also the brand new DMZ mode which takes a slightly more casual approach to Escape From Tarkov’s hardcore survival loot-based experience. In the style of Destiny 2, there are also raids now in Modern Warfare 2, which are brand new to the series and require teamwork and puzzle solving to complete.

Our Modern Warfare 2 review explains why it has the “potential to be the best CoD we’ve had in years”, while our guide to the best Modern Warfare 2 guns will serve you well in multiplayer.

Best PS5 FPS games: A player shoots a spider in Deep Rock Galactic

11. Deep Rock Galactic

Something entirely different than anything else before it on this list, Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative game all about mining. Invite your friends and jump into space caves galore, with a variety of objectives to complete, all while aliens and creatures try to thwart your attempts of extracting minerals and resources.

Deep Rock Galactic’s replayability comes in the form of procedurally generated levels and a lot of progression – no matter which class you pick, you’ll unlock a series of unique weapons from flamethrowers to rocket launchers, along with plenty of abilities.

Best PS5 FPS games: A succubus in Metal Hellsinger wielding a gun

12. Metal Hellsinger

If you’re used to playing FPS games along to the beat of some absolute bangers, then Metal Hellsinger is probably for you. Marrying the gunplay of Doom with the gameplay of Guitar Hero, this rhythm-based FPS offers you one of the best beats in the business.

To level up and get the most out of the game, you’ll need to shoot enemies and dodge attacks on the beat, which in turn ramps up the music and your powers. The more in-tune with the music you become, the more damage you’ll cause, and when you sync that up with the heavy metal sounds created by Two Feathers and vocalised by Serj Tankian, Randy Blythe, Alissa White-Gluz, and more, you know you’re in for a treat.

It’s a gripping, adrenaline inducing game – something we talk about in our Metal Hellsingers review – but it does ramp up in difficulty quite considerably towards the end.
